Celebrating Local Champions – Our Awards Programme
In order to recognise the amazing charitable work that goes on within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the Trustees of the Prince Philip Trust Fund created two awards to celebrate individuals and organisations that they feel have gone above and beyond their role and remit to make a significant difference to the local community and residents who live here.
Presented every two years, The Prince Philip Award was created to recognise the contribution of an individual person who has gone above and beyond their paid or voluntary role in helping others. Additionally, the Award was conceived as a way to honour the legacy of the late Prince Philip who served for 40 years as Chairman and Founder of the Prince Philip Trust Fund.
The person who receives this Award would embody some of the qualities of the late Prince Philip; someone who is dedicated to supporting the community, an inspirational leader and one who has dedicated themselves to excellence in their given pursuit.
The first Prince Philip Award was presented to James Manwaring, Director of Music of The Windsor Boys School in 2025. Read more here.
The John Handcock Award was created to recognise an organisation that has significantly supported local residents in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. This organisation would be recognisably delivering excellence in its area of operation, goes above and beyond its remit in order to deliver for local residents, and focuses on a particular current or urgent need in the local community. This Award is presented every two years, alternating with The Prince Philip Award.
This Award is named after John Handcock (1930 -2021) who was unarguably one of Windsor’s most prominent citizens. He was instrumental in the creation of the Prince Philip Trust Fund in 1977, Captain of the Lay Stewards of St George’s Chapel, and heavily involved in the civic life of Windsor through its many organisations and societies. He was also the Clerk of the Royal Albert Institute for decades until his death in January 2021. You can read his obituary in The Telegraph here.
