On your bike!

How we are helping to get local residents cycling.

The benefits of keeping fit and active throughout our lives cannot be overstated. It improves wellbeing, helps keep our waistlines in check and means we can enjoy a healthier lifestyle for longer. For the Prince Philip Trust Fund being able to support community groups and charities to keep local residents moving and active is a great use of grant funding.

We are fortunate in the Royal Borough to have two Cycle Hubs, one in Maidenhead and one in Windsor. Whilst they are separate community groups, they share the same ambition – to get more people cycling – and the Prince Philip Trust Fund is delighted to have been able to support both groups with grant funding over the past few years

Windsor Cycle Hub, based out of The Swan community pub, is staffed by volunteers who give up their free time to plan safe cycling routes and take out riders, many of whom are new to cycling or haven’t cycled for a long time. They focus on training and giving one-to-one attention to those who are looking to build up their confidence on the bike. Guided cycling rides take place on Saturdays and usually see between 8-10 people on the rides. And, as an informal and friendly set up, the project introduces local people and helps deal with social isolation. Sharing coffee and having a good chat is all part of the Windsor Cycle Hub experience.

Since opening in May 2021, Windsor Cycle Hub needed to train some of their volunteers to become mechanics to work in their ‘Bike Kitchen’, helping to repair bikes so that their service users can cycle safely. The Prince Philip Trust Fund provided a grant of £1000 to pay for this training and, on average, their Bike Kitchen is making up to six repairs every weekend.

David Bonney from Windsor Cycle Hub said:

“We’re so proud of the impact our volunteers have had on the community in Windsor and the surrounding villages so far.

We’ve had adults who couldn’t ride a bike benefit from our training and now they regularly attend our guided rides. We have riders from across the social spectrums of age, race, religion, gender and income levels – we all share a love of cycling. We’ve helped rescue countless unused bikes from garages and put them back into use – helping the riders keep fit, do their bit for the planet and now save money on fuel. We’ve been working with the local council and national groups to improve the cycling infrastructure in and around Windsor. Our motto is ‘Cycling for All’, and we’ve worked very hard to start fulfilling it in Windsor”.
